Granite countertops boast an upscale look

Granite is mined from quarries in slabs, and then these slabs are cut and polished to create countertops. The stone is available in many colors. White, black, and gray granite countertops are popular. Regardless of your choice of color, you can expect this high-end work surface to become a focal point in your kitchen. Town Flooring handles granite countertops in Charlottesville, Virginia. We are a locally-owned home improvement business that offers personalized service and professional installations.

Installation

It's easy to get prepared for installation day if you know what to expect. The installation team needs a clear pathway to the kitchen so they can easily carry the heavy countertops. While installers do their best to minimize dust, it's a good idea to remove drawers from cabinets. As for the job, installers make sure that countertops are level, edges are smooth, and slabs fit together correctly. While granite is one of the least porous stones, it can still absorb liquids. Therefore, the countertop is sealed after it is installed to avoid staining and etching.

Qualities

Granite has many qualities that make it ideal for countertops. In addition to its high resistance to stains, the stone is resistant to scratching and cracking. It is also impervious to heat. In other words, a trivet is not needed because there is no damage to the stone when a hot pot is placed on it. However, it's not a good idea to work directly on the countertop because it can dull knife blades. Granite is so tough that damage beyond repair is unlikely. Keep in mind that countertops need to be resealed regularly throughout their lifespan.

Maintenance

Countertops should be resealed once a year to keep liquid and bacteria out of pores. Topical sealants sit on the stone's surface while penetrating sealants seep into the stone and fill the pores. The former prevents scratching while the latter prevents staining. Daily cleaning is part of proper maintenance. Clean the countertop with a damp cloth and a small amount of dishwashing soap. Then rinse it with clean water, and dry it with a soft cloth. Weekly deep cleaning should include a pH neutral cleaner that is made for granite work surfaces.
