Granite has many qualities that make it ideal for countertops. In addition to its high resistance to stains, the stone is resistant to scratching and cracking. It is also impervious to heat. In other words, a trivet is not needed because there is no damage to the stone when a hot pot is placed on it. However, it's not a good idea to work directly on the countertop because it can dull knife blades. Granite is so tough that damage beyond repair is unlikely. Keep in mind that countertops need to be resealed regularly throughout their lifespan.
Countertops should be resealed once a year to keep liquid and bacteria out of pores. Topical sealants sit on the stone's surface while penetrating sealants seep into the stone and fill the pores. The former prevents scratching while the latter prevents staining. Daily cleaning is part of proper maintenance. Clean the countertop with a damp cloth and a small amount of dishwashing soap. Then rinse it with clean water, and dry it with a soft cloth. Weekly deep cleaning should include a pH neutral cleaner that is made for granite work surfaces.
